Presented above are two animated stop motion videos.
Each video consists of two frames; the first being a shot of one swinging bell which then zooms out to the second frame which is a circular arrangement of multiple swinging bells. Both frames have a background of what was made to resemble a luminous planetary body in the darkness of space but in the videos they appear more as a white centre that vignettes around the corners. There are speckles of white within the background, made to mimic stars twinkling. Since the bells were digitally drawn with a crayon brush, I decided on aestheticizing all elements of the video work to appear as if they were drawn using the same crayon brush. This uniformity in texture allow each component to be well integrated into the videos.
I've even animated the bells to sway in a fixed uniform path. This uniformity is an approach to aheare the bells as the fundamental subjects within the diptych. In doing so, I wanted the viewers to refer to the bells even when they are looking at the background elements. Just as how matter is the fundamental physical component of all things in the known universe, I wanted to reimagine matter taking the shape of a bell within this artwork.
The colour blue was chosen to let the bells stand out from the background but also to use the colour to show an earnestness to learn and understand something; like the symbolist painters did during the late 19th century. Even though I began "bleu bleue" using the colour blue to paint a haunting, lonely feeling that was manifesting within me during the Covid-19 lockdown, overtime the colour became a symbol of trying to understand myself and the world around me. Like Yves Klein, I too wanted to fundamentalize the colour blue in this artwork; I too wanted to show my affinity towards the colour and its importance to me.
Co creating a collaborative video work during Sculpture fieldwork sessions also inspired me to create a video work of my own. "Link to the Collaborative Artwork".
