 Genesis

"Genesis" is my attempt to ask philosophical questions and depict their fundamental reasons of being, by using simple nuances in aesthetics. "Genesis" explores painting in a generic way using digital paints. Generic in the sense that every stroke is hand painted and the only difference is that the canvas is a phone, the paints are digital and the brush is a finger.

The artworks in "Genesis" are also a homage to flat perspectives often seen in traditional asian paintings; thanka paintings to be specific. The paintings below are flat and consist of simple elements to create seemingly cute compositions; like the works of current contemporary asian artists like Kusama or James Jean. More can be found on my statement about why I choose to pursue such an aesthetic.

Another key visual element present in these paintings are lots of layers. A topographic map allows a person to navigate through peaks and gorges, the terrain, of a specific area. With that concept in mind, I have painted in a layer by layer manner to replicate a navigable terrain for relative concepts within each artwork. These concepts are metaphysical and are present in the everyday life and the everyday objects. Two of the everyday objects being painted are a helicopter and leaves.

To deepen my understanding of the metaphysical, I've looked into biologists, philosophers and spiritual writers/lecturers. My philosophy and theories module was immensely helpful towards my practice as it opened doors to many western philosopher who have written volumes on art, aesthetics and living. Meanwhile Sadh Guru and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche are two spiritual advocates that have helped me understand philosophical studies in a more personal way. In general,

"Genesis" is an amalgamation of being a Nepalese. Being raised in a country so small yet so diverse in race, culture, traditions, religions and geography that finding a fundamental reason of being is a prerequisite to understanding each other. Akin to this instinct of mine, "Genesis" marks the start of finding similar pursuits within the arts.

"Children looking out from their windows,

children running towards an open sky

with their curious eyes aiming to locate the sounds

of a helicopter hovering nearby"

In this artwork I depict every encounter a child has had with a helicopter as a layer. Chronologically fading from Dark to light with the darkest layer being their first encounter, we can see overtime the child builds an understanding of how a helicopter looks like. Curiosity, the first layer, fades away with every new layer that gets added on. The layers can continue adding on if the child decides to do so but the artwork stops at a layer where curiosity, though faint, can still be seen alongside the top most layer that resembles a helicopter. This is an attempt of visually depicting how layers can be used to show the process of understanding, grasping and identifying a subject matter; in this case a copter.

LIAISING

The artwork above is simply a cumulative liaison between structures that resemble a plant with leaves and structures that resemble layers of colours that form a topography; there is a lot of the two in the painting. It's a simple illustration with areas ranging from profuse dialogue among the plants and layers to none at all. Emphasis on the use of  "dialogue" in the sense that the two distinct subjects are able to create such vivid nuances within a confined space. This is a metaphorical representation of human induced nuances.  Be it between two or more people and their conversations, relations or be it just within yourself.
